On August 15, India and Sri Lanka will start their two-match Test series. The second Test will begin on August 23 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, while the first Test will take place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium in Galle.
Like any closely contested Test series, the result could be determined by a number of individual contests. These player battles—from bowlers trying to take advantage of familiar conditions to top-order batsman facing strong pace and spin—are anticipated to influence the series’ outcome. Watch out for these five crucial player fights.
Here are the 5 player battles to watch out for in the SL vs. IND. Test series:
5. Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Asitha Fernando
Yashasvi Jaiswal will be playing for the first time against Sri Lanka in Tests and in the country as well. Jaiswal has had a very good start to his Test career with 2535 runs in 29 tests, 7 centuries, and 13 fifties at an average of 48.75 and a best score of 214*. Jaiswal will have a trial by fire against Sri Lanka’s bowlers.
While playing tests in Sri Lanka, the threat is always spinners, but Sri Lanka has developed a good pace battery as well, and Asitha Fernando leads the way. He has 87 wickets in 26 Tests with best bowling figures of 6/51. Fernando has a big heart and pace and guile to trouble the best of batters on slow pitches as well.
4. Shubman Gill vs Lahiru Kumara
Shubman Gill will play his first Test series in Sri Lanka as a captain. He has a good record with the bat. He has 2,969 runs in 41 matches with 11 centuries and 8 fifties at an average of 44.31 and a best score of 269. Gill has shown great composure against spinners at home but will need to lead from the front given India’s poor record against spinners in recent matches.
Lahiru Kumara, if fit, is the fastest Sri Lankan bowler on the recent scene. Kumara has taken 104 wickets in 35 Tests with best bowling figures of 6/122. Kumara has bounced back as the best of batters on slow Sri Lankan pitches as well. If he’s included in the Sri Lankan squad, expect a tough time for Indian batters.
3. Mohammed Siraj vs Nishan Fernando
Mohammed Siraj will be fresh and fit for the Sri Lanka Test series. He has 140 wickets in 46 Tests with best bowling figures of 6/15. He has experience of bowling on slow pitches and bowling long spells. However, in Sri Lanka, he will be supporting spinners if he makes early inroads with the new ball.
Nishan Fernando is in the infancy of his Sri Lanka Test career with 622 runs in 12 matches with one century and a best score of 205 runs. The 26-year-old right-hander has shown great talent for the red-ball format with 6219 runs in 87 first-class games with 17 centuries and even a triple century to his name.
2. Kuldeep Yadav vs Kamindu Mendis
Kuldeep Yadav is expected to lead the Indian spin attack also featuring Ravindra Jadeja in the Sri Lanka Tests. Kuldeep has not played much Test cricket for India, but with Sri Lankan pitches helping bowlers like him, expect him to have some success and cement his spot in the Indian team.
Kamindu Mendis has had a Bradman-style start to his Test career, with 1453 runs in just 16 Tests and 5 centuries at an average of 58.12. He also bowls spin with his left and right hands, giving Sri Lanka an added advantage. However, being a middle-order batter, Mendis will have to deal with Kuldeep Yadav, and their battle will be an exciting one.
1. Rishabh Pant vs Prabath Jayasuriya
Rishabh Pant recently lost his India Test vice-captaincy to KL Rahul, and he has a lot to prove as Dhruiv Jurel is contesting his spot in the playing XI. Pant has played 50 Tests with 3557 runs at an average of 43.37 with 8 centuries and a best score of 159*. Pant has already lost his spot in India’s ODI and T20I squads and needs something special to make selectors begin believing in him once more.
Prabath Jayasuriya has become the workhorse spinner for Sri Lanka since the retirement of Rangana Herath. He has 125 wickets in just 23 Tests, having made his debut in 2022, with an average of 32.03 and best bowling figures of 7/52. Knowing Rishabh Pant will attack the premier spinner and Jayasuriya will be prepared for his aggression.
