On Wednesday, July 29, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the vice-captain of the East Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy 2026 campaign. Ishan Kishan has been named the captain of the 15-member squad.
The East Zone squad also includes Mohammed Shami, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Mukesh Kumar, Shahbaz Ahmed and Kumar Kushagra. Notably, Sooryavanshi made his India debut on the recent England tour, and also featured in the subsequent Zimbabwe T20Is, being adjudged as the Player of the Series.
The interesting talking point in the East Zone squad is Shami’s selection. Interestingly, Shami, who last played for India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final, continues to be a part of the domestic set-up. Moreover, he was recently part of the IPL 2026 season, playing 13 out of 14 games for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
On the other hand, the West Zone squad was also recently named, with Ruturaj Gaikwad named as the skipper. Shams Mulani has been named his deputy. Sarfaraz Khan, Tushar Deshpande, Urvil Patel and Prithvi Shaw are other notable inclusions.
